Egg Tempera, update

Here is the updated version of the egg tempera from a while ago.  The right hand side has been glazed with a violet umber which I think is the same pigment as the darkest dark.  This glaze was using sun-thickened linseed oil as the medium rather than egg tempera as I wanted an uneven smoky effect that is a lot of work to get with egg tempera alone.

Egg tempera, finished

Egg Tempera on Traditional Gesso Panel (birch plywood with mounted fabric, don't remember the fabric but likely linen).
18x24 in.

This is nearly finished.  I may have to sit on it a few days before doing any final adjustments.

It is pretty loosely painted, mostly with a mop brush and half-inch bristle flat.  Also, only used yellow ochre, burnt sienna, titanium white and iron oxide (hematite?  I got this dry earth pigment from a pottery supply store and it makes the most wonderful violet which is only used in the very dark parts).

Struggled through some parts because of the completely different optical properties of burnt sienna when transparent vs translucent.  I did take advantage of it but not as much as I would like.

Thursday costume drawing: Anna

About 1.5 hours

I initially started with a detailed drawing but a bit smaller to include her feet but didn't like the composition, so restarted at about a half hour into the pose.  Unfortunately, I didn't measure but winged it and this shows -- her nose is slightly larger here.  But I got the overall effect of being fast and lose this time.  Plus I can see that the skin tones are looking better.

Progress on the ET paintings

Made some progress on the paintings (there is one more I am working on but I am still not satisfied with the composition of that one).

Still using watercolor techniques and only using a fat mop brush and painting loosely.  Next step is building color and texture.

Egg Tempera underpainting

Just started a couple of new egg tempera paintings on my home made RSG panel (18x24).  It is interesting that I can now use some watercolor techniques like lifting very effectively in Egg Tempera too.  I guess that is the influence of having worked in watercolor for a while.

Here is one that is a bit more developed but still in the "underpainting" phase.

It is election day in the US, so a red-white-blue theme seemed appropriate.
